When There’s No Place Like Home

Hilary August 1, 2015

What makes you feel at home is unique to every single person. You can do some things to help turn your house into a home – and your home into a haven. That’s where No Place Like Home enters the picture. I want to help you create a home. And I want to help you transform your home into a haven.

Home.

There’s no place like it.

You know the peaceful, comfy feeling when you’re home. But having a house – or apartment or dorm room or trailer or cabin or anywhere you live – doesn’t automatically make it a home.

Home is filled with special qualities. Sometimes an unlikely place becomes home simply because of experiences and memories.

Places can be homey and inviting, thanks to the sights, sounds, and smells. You can just walk through the door and sense you’re welcome. You feel like you’re coming home – or you know you want to stay for a long, long time.

What makes you feel at home is unique to every single person.

You can do some things to help turn your house into a home – and your home into a haven. That’s where No Place Like Home enters the picture.

Need some help?

I want to help you create a home. And a haven.

Before I became a wife, I knew marriage was so much more than the wedding day. And I knew creating a home was so much more than registering for wedding gifts. But once I said “I do” and the reality of a busy life set in, I quickly realized how difficult it was to cultivate a satisfying marriage and home that brought contentment and peace. And I quickly realized I didn’t have a clue about what to do.

I searched for ways to improve. I asked older, wiser women for advice. I read and listened to whatever I could in a quest to find what worked well for others. I tried – and tried again – different approaches until I found what worked for me. And I covered my marriage and home in countless prayers.

In the process, my prayers were answered. The advice and approaches stuck with me. And today, both my marriage and my home bring peace, contentment, and satisfaction. I would love to share what has worked for me, to help you find peace and contentment as a wife and homemaker.

Through this blog, I want to help you feather your nest. After spending decades learning how to create a home, I want to help you transform your home into a haven … for you and for your family.

Homemaking should be simple – not stressful. It should bring joy to you and those who live in and visit your house.

What makes you feel at home is unique to every single person. You can do some things to help turn your house into a home – and your home into a haven. That’s where No Place Like Home enters the picture. I want to help you create a home.

Embracing imperfection

Today, more than ever, homes and havens are needed. When people “connect” so much through electronic devices, it’s vital to connect on a personal level. Your home is your very own place to create connections — with your family, friends, and neighbors.

When I think of home, I’m often reminded of my late grandmother’s house. An older home filled with character (picture built-in bookcases, hardwood floors and a sunroom), it was furnished modestly. But as soon as you walked through the door, you felt like you were home.

Grandma didn’t have fancy furnishings or fantastic food, but it didn’t matter. Her home was filled with joy, peace, and lots of laughter so you felt like you just wanted to sit down and stay a while.

Grandma’s ability to make everyone feel welcome and at ease in her home was a gift — because people long to feel like they belong or are wanted.

“Successful” homemaking

Essentially, successful homemaking puts people at ease. It brings comfort in a physical place. It doesn’t matter how big or small, how lavish or simple that place might be.

Sometimes, this can look like simply opening your home and being welcoming.

Being genuine is another great place to start – even if it means sharing your home that seems less than perfect to you. Neatness and a sparkling clean home aren’t necessary. (But it doesn’t hurt to pick up enough so that your guests have room to sit!)

Homemaking isn’t rocket science, but it is a craft that can be honed and perfected with practice. I’m not talking about Pinterest Perfect – in fact, I don’t really think a Pinterest Perfect interior creates a home at all – but something that is just right for you.

Together, we can transform where you live. Are you ready?

What makes you feel at home is unique to every single person. You can do some things to help turn your house into a home – and your home into a haven. That’s where No Place Like Home enters the picture. I want to help you create a home. And I want to help you transform your home into a haven.

Tell me about your ideal home … when have you felt like there’s no place like home?

My ideal home would be comfortable and inviting, with room for the contents and welcoming to guests. My style, just discovered through Pinterest researching, is Comfortable Coastal Chic. So now I have the opportunity to make my home match my style and my homemaking to match my values.

I have had many homes and styles, based mainly on the states I lived in, and I have enjoyed them all. At 73 I have the honor of many happy memories. But it’s important to keep moving forward, not backward. Now I am focused on creating the best possible lifestyle for my husband and myself given our circumstances. But that’s been my focus all my life, just not with the resources available now. I have enjoyed your inspiration and ideas. Thanks so much! I am amazed at how smart you are and so young, too.

I loved this article! Thank you Hilary xxxxx

For me, home is wherever my family are. While fixtures and fittings can make people comfortable and warm, I think Homemaking is a work of heart.

That said, I really enjoy beautifyimg my home and my style is English country/shabby chic. I love the designs of Cath Kidston, Laura Ashley and Rachel Ashwell.

Pinterest is wonderful for inspiration and I also enjoy interior design and Homemaking magazines.
